The Barney Mullins Swim Classic is the heart-and-soul swim of Freshwater Beach. Named in honour of Freshwater SLSC Life Member and local swim legend George ‘Barney' Mullins, this event is soaked in surf club history and ocean swimming spirit. It kicked off back in 1987 as a fun end-of-season hit-out for club members, held the weekend before the Aussie Championships to shake off the competitive cobwebs and just enjoy the swim. For 20 years, it was a Freshie-only affair, until 2007 when the doors were thrown open and the wider ocean swimming community was welcomed in. The 1.5km course is everything swimmers love about “Freshie”: a beautiful, protected bay framed by rocky headlands, clean water, and that unmistakable Northern Beaches welcome. It's a community-first kind of swim, with an atmosphere that's always buzzing but never overwhelming, just the right mix of friendly and festive. Whet
