Triathlon distances explained: sprint, olympic, half-iron, ironman

Triathlon comes in four standard distances. The naming is consistent worldwide — what changes between formats is how long you spend on each leg and how the day plays out.

The four standard triathlon distances

A triathlon stacks three sports back-to-back: swim, bike, run. The total distance defines the format. Sprint is the entry-level distance, olympic is the federation standard, half-ironman (70.3) is the popular long-distance step, and full ironman is the long-day classic.

Most national federations follow the same four-tier ladder. Distances are usually quoted in metres for the swim and kilometres for the bike and run, except for the ironman branding (70.3 and 140.6) which uses miles for the cumulative total.

Sprint triathlon: 750 m / 20 km / 5 km

Sprint triathlon is the standard short-course format. Swim 750 metres, bike 20 kilometres, run 5 kilometres. Most first-timers start here. Total time for an average finisher is 1h15–1h45.

Sprint races are the easiest to train for around a 9-to-5 — you can prepare on roughly 6 hours of training a week.

Olympic distance: 1.5 km / 40 km / 10 km

Also called "standard" or "international" distance. Swim 1,500 metres, bike 40 kilometres, run 10 kilometres. This is the format used at the Olympic Games and most World Triathlon series.

Olympic-distance racing rewards aerobic strength more than pure speed. Average finisher times sit around 2h15–3h00.

Half-ironman / 70.3: 1.9 km / 90 km / 21.1 km

Branded "Ironman 70.3" because the cumulative distance is 70.3 miles. Swim 1.9 km (1.2 mi), bike 90 km (56 mi), run a half-marathon (21.1 km / 13.1 mi).

The most popular long-distance format for amateurs. Average finisher times: 5h00–7h30. Training peaks at 10–14 hours a week.

Ironman: 3.8 km / 180 km / 42.2 km

The full distance — 140.6 miles. Swim 3.8 km, bike 180 km, run a marathon. Race-day cutoffs are usually 17 hours. Finisher times for amateurs sit between 9h30 and 16h.

Training a full ironman takes 12–20 hours a week for 6+ months. It is genuinely a different sport from olympic-distance racing.
