Half Marathon pace chart FAQ

How do I use the pace chart?

Find your target finish time in the first column, then read across for pace and cumulative checkpoint times. For a target between rows, enter your exact time in the calculator. All times are elapsed times from the start.

What is the difference between even pace and a negative split?

Even pace means covering each unit of distance in the same time. A negative split means completing the second half faster than the first. This chart assumes even pace throughout; it does not prescribe a race strategy.

How does race pace relate to training zones?

This chart divides a chosen time by distance. It does not measure effort or assign training zones. A target race pace alone is not enough to establish training zones or decide the pace of every training session.

Should I use pace per kilometre or per mile?

Use the unit shown by your watch or the course markers. Both columns represent the same speed: a mile is 1.609344 kilometres. The splits here use kilometre checkpoints, regardless of which pace unit you prefer.

Why might my watch or rounded splits differ from the chart?

Pace and cumulative splits are calculated from the full race distance, then rounded independently to the nearest second. Multiplying a displayed, rounded pace can produce a different total. The chart does not adjust for hills, stops, weather or the distance recorded by a watch.
