The best energy gels of 2026: carbs, caffeine and real prices

Eight energy gels compared by carbohydrate dose, caffeine, sodium and real cost, with practical plans for marathons and long rides.

The 2026 gel market has moved beyond the old 20–25 g sachet. Five products in this shortlist deliver at least 40 g, and resealable 90 g pouches are now normal options for endurance athletes. Price per packet hides the useful comparison: the products checked here range from €1.27 to €3.96 per 25 g of carbohydrate, before delivery. A large packet can therefore cost more at checkout but less per gram of usable fuel.

The three-product shortlist is simple. SiS Beta Fuel Gel is the best all-round balance of a 40 g dual-source formula, broad Spain availability and a reasonable unit cost. 226ERS High Fructose Gel wins value at €1.27 per 25 g of carbohydrate. Precision PF 90 Gel is the high-carbohydrate specialist: 90 g in a resealable pouch, useful when pocket space and wrapper count matter. No ranking overrides personal tolerance tested at race intensity.

This is desk research, not a claim that SportPlan taste-tested every gel. The selection starts with declared carbohydrate sources, dose per complete packet, caffeine and sodium. Prices were read from official Spain or EU shops where possible; two were taken from current European or Spanish price listings. Every price was converted to one complete gel and then normalised with the same calculation: price per gel × 25 ÷ grams of carbohydrate. Delivery, subscription and temporary member discounts were excluded.

Products also needed a plausible ordering route for a buyer in Spain on 4 August 2026, plus an independent review or specialist source that discussed formula, texture or use. Availability can change after publication. Brand claims about easier digestion are treated as claims; an individual still has to rehearse the exact product. Rankings reward clear labels and useful dose architecture, not fashionable packaging. The 40 g threshold describes carbohydrate in one gel, not a universal intake recommendation.

SiS Beta Fuel is the most balanced default in this group: 40 g of carbohydrate from maltodextrin and fructose in a published 1:0.8 glucose-to-fructose ratio, no caffeine and about 30 mg sodium. Six gels cost €17.50 in the checked Spanish shop, or €2.92 each. That equals €1.82 per 25 g of carbohydrate, markedly less than many premium 20–25 g sachets.

The 40 g unit makes 80 g/h easy to count as two gels, while leaving hydration and sodium to a separate plan. It is concentrated rather than isotonic, so water remains sensible. Cycling Weekly liked the high energy content but found it viscous; that is precisely why race-pace practice matters. Choose it for a modern, transparent formula without the bulk of three small gels per hour. Avoid assuming the published ratio makes 120 g/h automatically tolerable.

The Spanish 226ERS gel is the value winner because the comparison uses fuel, not packet count. One 80 g sachet supplies 55 g carbohydrate from maltodextrin and fructose in a 10:8 ratio, plus 250 mg sodium. The caffeine-free flavours cost €2.80 and were shown in stock when checked. That works out to only €1.27 per 25 g carbohydrate, the lowest figure in the table.

Its large dose suits trained athletes targeting 60–90 g/h, especially those who prefer one planned packet to several small ones. It is not isotonic and the brand instructs users to take it with water. The 250 mg sodium must also be counted alongside drink mix and capsules. The independent Spanish source corroborates the 55 g dose, 10:8 blend and sodium figure. It is excellent value only if the full portion and texture are tolerated; wasting half a packet removes the advantage.

PF 90 puts 90 g of carbohydrate in a 153 g pouch with a resealable cap. The formula uses maltodextrin and fructose at a published 2:1 glucose-to-fructose ratio and contains 0 mg caffeine and 0 mg sodium. The EU shop listed three pouches at €17.99, so one costs €6.00 but only €1.67 per 25 g carbohydrate. The big sticker price is therefore misleading.

This is a dispensing format, not an instruction to swallow 90 g at once. The cap lets a rider or runner divide the pouch into roughly 30 g portions. Cycling Weekly praised the mild taste, high mixed-carbohydrate load and reduced wrapper count. It is particularly useful where pocket space is scarce, although the pouch itself is heavier. Because sodium is deliberately absent, pair it with an independently planned drink or electrolyte source rather than assuming the gel covers hydration.

Maurten combines 25 g carbohydrate, a 1:0.8 glucose-to-fructose ratio, 100 mg caffeine and about 22 mg sodium in one 40 g hydrogel. The Spanish box price was €47.50 for 12, or €3.96 per gel and €3.96 per 25 g carbohydrate. It is expensive as fuel, but the value here is a clearly measured caffeine dose with only seven listed ingredients.

One packet already equals roughly 1.4 mg/kg for a 70 kg athlete. Two equal about 2.9 mg/kg before counting coffee, cola or pre-workout products. That makes it easier to split a researched caffeine target, but also easier to overshoot it. Running Warehouse separately reviewed the concentrated 100 mg version. Use it as one or two deliberate placements, not as every gel in a long race. Caffeine response, sleep, anxiety, heart rate and medication make this the least universal category.

Rawvelo takes the opposite route to high-density laboratory-style gels. Blood Orange uses water, organic brown-rice syrup, fruit concentrates, coconut sugar, carob gum and sea salt. It provides 20 g carbohydrate, 0 mg caffeine and about 40 mg sodium; the glucose-to-fructose ratio is not published. XMiles listed a single gel at €2.42, which is €3.03 per 25 g carbohydrate.

Cyclingnews selected Rawvelo for sensitive stomachs because of its lower dose and all-natural positioning, while clearly noting that the unpublished ratio limits precision at very high intakes. That caveat matters: natural does not mean guaranteed tolerance, and fruit-derived sugars can still cause symptoms. This pick is for beginners or athletes who prefer recognisable ingredients and are comfortable building hourly intake with several small units. It is not the best tool for maximising 90–120 g/h with exact transporter maths.

SiS GO Isotonic remains the clearest no-water option. Each 60 ml sachet provides 22 g carbohydrate from maltodextrin, 0 mg caffeine and only about 4 mg sodium from 0.01 g salt. The Spanish seven-flavour pack cost €17.50: €2.50 per gel and €2.84 per 25 g carbohydrate. Its single-source formula is effectively glucose-only rather than a published mixed-carbohydrate ratio.

The advantage is concentration: the manufacturer designs it to be swallowed without extra water. That is useful between aid stations or when drinking at pace is difficult. It is not a hydration product, and the large 60 ml packet delivers fewer carbohydrates than many smaller concentrated gels. Cycling Weekly found the liquid texture easier to consume but noted that almost three are needed to reach 60 g/h. Choose it for convenience and familiarity, not maximum carbohydrate density or meaningful sodium replacement.

Gel 160 packages 40 g carbohydrate at a 1:0.8 glucose-to-fructose ratio, with 0 mg caffeine and about 30 mg sodium. A Spanish comparison listing showed a 12-box from €49.90, or €4.16 each and €2.60 per 25 g carbohydrate. It is not cheap, but its 40 g unit reduces the number of packets needed for a 3.5–4 hour marathon.

The six-ingredient, flavourless hydrogel is a good race-specific candidate for athletes who dislike strong sweetness, and the independent review highlights the jump from 25 g in Gel 100 to 40 g. The dose is still concentrated: practise opening, chewing or swallowing it at marathon pace and decide whether water helps. A 40 g packet does not prove the hydrogel prevents stomach trouble. The practical win is logistics and clean carbohydrate counting, with caffeine kept separate for one or two intentional late-race doses.

Amacx Turbo Gel combines 40 g carbohydrate at a 1:0.8 glucose-to-fructose ratio with 200 mg sodium, no caffeine and a ready-to-drink 60 ml texture. The Spanish shop listed four gels at €14.60, or €3.65 each and €2.28 per 25 g carbohydrate. That is a useful middle ground between small sachets and a 90 g pouch.

For a gran fondo, the 40 g unit fits naturally beside carbohydrate drink or real food, while the sodium contributes a known amount to the total. It does not replace a sweat-based hydration plan, especially in heat. The independent Amacx review discussed the Turbo line and its softer flavours, but individual tolerance remains decisive. Its larger packet is easier to carry in a jersey than in a marathon belt, which helps explain the cycling recommendation. Select caffeine-free Citrus so stimulant dosing stays independent.

Start with carbohydrates per hour, then decide which packets can deliver that number. The joint sports-nutrition position stand supports about 30–60 g/h for many endurance sessions and up to 90 g/h of multiple-transportable carbohydrate for longer events. A 2026 endurance review describes intakes up to 120 g/h as possible in trained athletes, not a default for everyone. A practical ladder is 30 g/h for roughly 60–90 minutes, 60 g/h for two to three hours, 90 g/h for long hard racing, and only move towards 120 g/h after progressive rehearsal.

Glucose and fructose use different intestinal transporters. A label such as 2:1 means two parts glucose or maltodextrin-derived glucose to one part fructose. Modern 1:0.8 products raise the fructose share. That can support higher total absorption, but it does not make a packet universally gentle. Count all sources: gels, drink, chews, cola and aid-station food.

For caffeine, the ISSN position stand finds the strongest evidence around 3–6 mg/kg, with possible effects at lower doses and no need to chase the top of the range. Add every source. A 70 kg athlete reaches 2.9 mg/kg with two 100 mg gels. Traditional timing is around 60 minutes before the desired effect, but splitting a lower total before and late in the race can reduce one large hit. Rehearse it and protect sleep.

The gut is trainable. The gut-training review supports repeated exposure to race-like carbohydrate and fluid plans. Increase by roughly 10–15 g/h across suitable long sessions, hold the dose until symptoms settle, and change only one variable. Concentrated gels usually need water; isotonic gels include enough water to reduce that immediate need, but neither type replaces overall hydration. Use the fueling planner to total carbohydrate.

Real food wins when intensity is lower, chewing is easy and hunger matters. Bananas, dates, rice cakes and sandwiches cost less and add variety on long rides. Gels win at marathon pace, during hard climbs, or whenever compact and predictable carbohydrate is more useful than fibre, fat or protein. A sensible long event mixes both instead of treating every hour as a gel-only contest.

For a 3:30–4:00 marathon, a workable example is one rehearsed gel every 25–30 minutes beginning around kilometre 6. That produces roughly seven gels for a 3:30 runner and seven to eight for a runner near four hours, depending on finish timing and what the aid-station drink contributes. Seven 25 g gels supply 175 g in 3.5 hours, or 50 g/h; drink carbohydrate can lift the total towards 60–75 g/h. Seven 40 g gels would be 80 g/h, a much more demanding plan. Place caffeine rather than scattering it blindly. For a trained 70 kg runner, one 100 mg gel around halfway and a second around kilometre 30 totals 200 mg, about 2.9 mg/kg, before coffee or course cola. A caffeine-sensitive athlete may choose one or none. Record packet size, planned water and total caffeine in the fueling planner.

For a five-hour gran fondo, an example target after gut training is 75–80 g/h: one 40 g Amacx Turbo Gel plus 35–40 g from drink or easy-to-chew food each hour. That is five gels, not fifteen, with 1,000 mg sodium from the gels across the ride; bottles, weather and personal sweat losses determine what else is needed. Use bananas or rice cakes early and reserve gels for climbs or the final two hours. Find a rehearsal event in the running calendar if the target is on foot; nothing new belongs on race day.

Lactate gels are a separate 2026 niche: conventional carbohydrate plus an added exogenous lactate dose, with early evidence that does not yet prove superiority over well-planned carbohydrate alone. Divide the carbohydrate target by the carbohydrate in each gel. A 3:30–4:00 runner taking one 25 g gel every 25–30 minutes from kilometre 6 will usually carry seven or eight. Subtract carbohydrate supplied by the course drink and test the complete schedule in long runs.

Use mostly caffeine-free fuel so carbohydrate and stimulant doses stay separate. Add one or two caffeinated gels only when the total from coffee, cola and supplements fits a rehearsed mg/kg plan. Sensitive athletes may perform better with none.

Isotonic gels such as SiS GO are designed for use without immediate water. Concentrated gels are normally easier to dilute with water. In both cases you still need an overall fluid plan; “no water needed” does not mean “no hydration needed.”

Yes. Check the best-before date, seal and storage instructions. Carbohydrate gels may remain stable for months, but a swollen, leaking, damaged or unusually smelling packet should be discarded. Do not rely on an expired race stash without checking every unit.

Not universally. Gels are compact, low-fibre and easy to count at high intensity. Bananas and dates are cheaper, more food-like and excellent when chewing is comfortable. Gels are a logistics tool, not nutritionally superior everyday food.

Start with a modest 20–25 g caffeine-free gel, such as Rawvelo Blood Orange or SiS GO Isotonic, because the dose is easy to understand. Test one during a training session with water access before increasing hourly intake.

A higher price may buy a specific texture, caffeine dose, large resealable pouch or simple ingredient list. It does not automatically buy more fuel or better performance. Compare €/25 g carbohydrate, then pay extra only for a feature you have shown you need.
