Spain and France are, without question, two of the world's greatest trail running destinations. Together they share the Pyrenees — arguably the most iconic mountain range for the sport — while individually offering thousands of kilometers of technical singletrack, volcanic ridgelines, coastal paths, and ancient pilgrimage routes.

If you're planning your 2026 trail running season and any part of it touches Iberia or France, this guide is your starting point.

Why Run Trails in Spain and France?#

Spain: Year-Round Racing, Unmatched Diversity#

From the volcanic trails of the Canary Islands to the green mountains of Galicia, Spain offers trail running year-round:

  • January–March: Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma) host world-class ultra-trails when the rest of Europe is frozen
  • April–June: Sierra Nevada, Catalonia, Valencia highlands
  • July–September: Pyrenees, Picos de Europa, Asturias
  • October–December: Andalucía, Extremadura, Mallorca

The trail running culture in Spain is massive. Local clubs organize hundreds of events, from 10km mountain runs to 100-mile ultras. Competition is fierce but welcoming — Spanish runners are passionate and social.

France: The Spiritual Home of Ultra-Trail#

France didn't just give the world UTMB (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc) — it created a global sport. The country hosts more trail running events than perhaps any nation on Earth, with a race seemingly in every valley, every mountain, every weekend from March to November.

Key regions:

  • Alps: UTMB, Grand Raid des Hautes-Alpes, countless local events
  • Pyrenees (French side): Luchon-Superbagnères, Tor des Géants qualifiers
  • Massif Central: Volcanic trails around Puy-de-Dôme
  • Vosges & Jura: Underrated, technical, beautiful
  • Côte d'Azur and Provence: Coastal and garrigue terrain, accessible year-round

Key Trail Running Events in Spain 2026#

Canary Islands Circuit (January–March)#

The Canary Islands are the winter trail running capital of Europe. In early 2026, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and La Palma all continue their marquee events:

  • Transgrancanaria (Gran Canaria) — one of the world's top ultras, ~128km
  • Tenerife Bluetrail — multiple distances, spectacular volcanic terrain
  • Ultra Piton des Neiges de La Réunion qualifying events — for those with global ambitions

These events attract international elites and thousands of amateur runners. Canary Island courses are technical, exposed, and absolutely stunning.

Pyrenees Races (June–September)#

The Spanish Pyrenees host some of Europe's most dramatic trail running from early summer through early autumn:

  • Zegama-Aizkorri (May/June, Basque Country) — one of the most iconic skyrunning events, brutal and beautiful
  • Buff® Epic Trail / UTMB qualifying races — multiple events across Catalonia and Aragon qualify for UTMB stones
  • Ultra Guara Somontano — lesser-known but spectacular, through the Pre-Pyrenees limestone karst landscape

Southern Spain (Spring & Autumn)#

  • Transvulcania qualifiers and local ultras in Andalucía keep the calendar full
  • Sierra Nevada Trail Running — races at altitude with stunning views of the Mediterranean from 3,000m
  • Mallorca Trail events grow every year as the island's trail network expands

Key Trail Running Events in France 2026#

UTMB World Series (August, Chamonix)#

The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc remains the pinnacle of the sport. The 2026 edition runs in late August from Chamonix, with races including:

  • UTMB® (168km, ~10,000m D+) — the main event
  • CCC® (100km) — Courmayeur to Chamonix
  • OCC® (55km) — a great entry point for the UTMB World Series
  • MCC® (40km) — accessible to strong recreational runners

Entry requires UTMB Index points accumulated through qualifying races worldwide — start collecting them now for 2026 or 2027.

French Alps (June–September)#

Beyond UTMB, the French Alps offer an enormous trail calendar:

  • Skyrunning events in the Écrins and Vanoise national parks
  • The Grand Raid des Hautes-Alpes — challenging, less commercialized
  • Grenoble area races — extremely accessible, technically demanding

Pyrenees (French Side, July–October)#

  • Luchon-Superbagnères and surrounding area events
  • Pic du Midi de Bigorre races
  • Events in the Ariège and Hautes-Pyrénées departments that share terrain with Spanish counterparts

Massif Central (Spring & Autumn)#

  • Trails en Auvergne — volcanic cones, unique geology, excellent organization
  • Events around Clermont-Ferrand, Le Puy-en-Velay (starting point of the Camino Frances)

How to Choose Your Trail Race#

By Experience Level#

LevelDistanceElevationRace Type
Beginner10–20km<500m D+Local mountain run
Intermediate25–50km500–2,000m D+Regional trail
Advanced50–80km2,000–4,000m D+Ultra-trail
Elite/Expert80km+4,000m+ D+Major ultra

By Time of Year#

Spring (March–May): French and Spanish regions below 1,500m open. Perfect for first races of the season — temperatures are ideal and courses aren't yet snow-free at altitude.

Summer (June–August): High-altitude racing season in both countries. Heat is a factor at lower elevations — plan accordingly.

Autumn (September–November): Often the best conditions. Crowds thin, temperatures drop, foliage is spectacular. Many athletes do their best races in autumn.

Winter (December–February): Canary Islands are the answer. Or consider coastal southern Spain and Provence, which remain runnable year-round.

Cross-Border Races: The Pyrenees Classics#

Some of the most spectacular trail races in Europe cross the border between Spain and France. The Pyrenees are perfectly positioned for this:

  • Transpyrénéa — a legendary point-to-point ultra across the full range from Atlantic to Mediterranean
  • Andorra Ultra Trail — based in Andorra with terrain extending into both countries
  • Multi-stage events that camp in mountain refuges on both sides of the border

These races require significant logistics but offer an unmatched experience.

Gear Tips for Trail Running in Spain and France#

Spain-Specific#

  • Sun protection is critical — Spanish mountain sun is intense, especially at altitude
  • Carry more water than you think — sources can be scarce in southern Spain
  • Snake awareness in summer, especially on low-elevation courses in Andalucía and Extremadura

France-Specific#

  • French events have strict mandatory gear lists — check them carefully, marshals enforce them
  • Alpine weather changes fast — a summer day race can turn cold by afternoon at altitude
  • Poles are widely accepted in French ultras, unlike some international events
