Taper strategy for busy endurance athletes: reduce fatigue without losing sharpness

RC
By Ramon Curto · MSc Exercise Physiology · 15 years coaching

A simple taper framework to cut fatigue, preserve race-specific feel, and arrive confident on race day.

Most tapers fail for one of two reasons: athletes either cut too little and carry fatigue into race day, or cut too much and feel flat.

For busy endurance athletes, a practical taper starts 10-14 days out: reduce total load by 30-45%, keep one short race-pace touchpoint each week, and protect sleep aggressively.

Use Garmin recovery and HRV trends plus Strava load context to verify adaptation. If sleep quality drops or resting heart rate rises, remove one hard segment instead of forcing confidence workouts.

At SportPlan, taper is execution, not hope. We keep enough specificity to stay sharp while removing enough stress to unlock race-day performance.
